Ryan Phelps and Logan McCleery were stingy pitchers for the Patterson High varsity baseball team over the weekend. Against Gustine and Orestimba respectively, Phelps and McCleery combined to allow only four hits and one run through 14 innings of work. Phelps shut the door on Gustine with a complete game, two-hit shutout on March 15, while McCleery replicated the feat with a two-hitter the following day at Orestimba.

Phelps shuts out Gustine

Two hits, two walks and no runs. That was all that senior Ryan Phelps allowed to occur last Friday when the Tigers hosted Gustine High.

Phelps was in a groove, yielding very little to the Gustine offense. Meanwhile, the Patterson offense had little trouble scoring, to put together a 10-0 shutout win over the visitors.

Senior Alex Mora was 1-3 with three RBIs. Junior Zach Rodriguez went 2-4 with a run, while senior Miguel Alvarez finished the day 1-4 with two runs, two RBIs and four stolen bases.

Gustine freshman Devin Bettencourt was the only hitter to find any success against Phelps going 2-3 in the loss.

Patterson opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but opened the game up with a four-run third inning to take a commanding five-run lead. Runs in the fourth and fifth innings grew the lead, until the Tigers secured a mercy rule victory when they scored a trio of runs in the sixth inning.

McCleery two-hits Orestimba

Sophomore Logan McCleery enjoyed a strong outing in Newman on Saturday. He pitched a complete game for the Tigers, allowing two hits, four walks, while striking out five. The only run to be scored in the game by Orestimba in the fifth inning was not charged as an earned run against McCleery.

Patterson took the lead with a three-run top of the second, and followed that with one run each in the top of the third and fourth innings.

Neither team had a strong outing defensively. Each team committed four errors each on Saturday.

Alvarez was 2-4 with an RBI, a run and a pair of stolen bases.

Junior Cesar Martin got on base three times going 1-2 with two walks and two stolen bases.

Sophomore Jordan Imada was 1-3 with a run and a couple of RBIs.

Lost league opener to Buhach Colony

Buhach Colony entered Tuesday’s game with only one loss so far this season, and one could see why, following their 15-2 shelling of Patterson.

By the conclusion of the top of the second inning the Thunder held a commanding 8-0 lead over Patterson.

The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, but the offense ultimately could not overcome the early deficit.

Buhach Colony’s offense was in full fight tallying 18 hits against the Tigers. Although Buhach Colony’s bats were lively, the Patterson defense did not help. The Tigers committed seven errors in total.

Buhach Colony senior Ruben Garcia had a big day at the plate, going 4-5 with four RBIs, two doubles, a stolen base and three runs. Sophomore Jake Sapien was 2-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. Senior Brandon Ruiz finished going 3-4, and senior Brendan Ekizian was 2-4 with an RBI.

Patterson senior Alex Mora was 2-2 with a stolen base. Junior Cesar Martin legged out a triple to go 1-3, while senior Ryan Phelps was 1-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Senior Miguel Alvarez got the start for Patterson. He finished the day with five innings pitched, 12 runs, four earned runs, a walk and three strikeouts.

Martin came in relief for two innings yielding four earned runs on four hits and two walks.

Patterson will travel to play at Buhach Colony on March 21. Patterson will host Granada on March 23.
