A 17-year-old Tracy girl was killed in a two-car collision on 11th Street near Lovely Road east of town Thursday morning.

According to California High Patrol Officer Joe Whitlock, the crash occurred shortly after 11:15 a.m. on a stretch of 11th Street between Lovely and Banta roads. A 2008 Toyota Camry was heading east in the left lane, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Tracy. A 1997 Saturn coupe driven by a 66-year-old man, also from Tracy, was heading west, also in the left lane.

According to witnesses, the Toyota appeared to lose control for an unknown reason and veered across the double yellow lines, crossing into the westbound lanes in the path of the Saturn.

The Toyota was broadsided by the Saturn, and the impact sent both vehicles onto the shoulder on the north side of the road. The Toyota landed on the driver’s side near an orchard.

The drivers of both cars were trapped in their vehicles. Local fire crews freed them both and they were taken to San Joaquin General Hospital with major injuries.

The 17-year-old in the passenger seat of the Toyota was killed on impact. According to the CHP, she had been wearing a seat belt. There were no other occupants in either car.

The section of 11th Street where the cars collided has a posted speed limit of 55 mph. CHP investigators haven’t yet determined how fast the cars were traveling at impact.

Whitlock said at the scene that it was too early to know whether any drugs or alcohol were involved.
