Tracy police went to the 1800 block of Geranium Way on Wednesday night after a woman called at 9:42 p.m. and reported that her estranged husband had returned to the house in violation of a restraining order and had hit her teenage son. The man reportedly took the woman’s car keys and then left in a Dodge pickup.

At 10:35 p.m., police heard that the man was threatening to kill family members, and although police confirmed that he is a gun owner, it was unclear whether he had any weapons with him at the time.

A short time later, he returned to the house, and the woman and her children hid from him in the back of the house as she called police. Police arrived and the woman and children escaped from the house with the man still inside. Police took the family to nearby Hirsch Elementary School, where they would be safe.

More officers from the Tracy Police Department, San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol arrived and surrounded the house, and the Tracy Police Department SWAT team was also called.

During the standoff, the man reportedly retreated into the attic of the house and had climbed up on top of the roof, eventually leaping off the roof and into a backyard swimming pool before going back inside.

He later jumped over a series of backyard fences on his way toward Mountain View Road to the north, where two police units were waiting for him. He surrendered without further incident at midnight.

The 41-year-old man was booked into San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of violating a protective order, and he was held on $10,000 bail pending a Friday morning court hearing in Manteca.
