Tracy City Councilwoman Veronica Vargas announced her plans to run for San Joaquin County supervisor on Thursday, well in advance of the November 2020 general election.

Vargas and Tracy Councilwoman Rhodesia Ransom are among the first to declare their candidacy for the  Fifth District seat, representing the southwest corner of the county, including Tracy, Mountain House, Manteca and Lathrop. Current Fifth District Supervisor Bob Elliott of Tracy will run for the 10th Congressional District seat currently occupied by Rep. Josh Harder (D-Modesto) in 2020.

Vargas announced her candidacy in a statement released Thursday, saying that she is running on her record of making Tracy a safer community and of bringing more jobs to town. She states that since she was first elected in 2014, the city has seen a decrease in property crimes, violent crimes and arrests, and has added 5,500 new jobs. Vargas was re-elected in 2018.

“I look forward to taking my record of achieving results to the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, so that I can help do for District 5 what we accomplished in Tracy,” she said.

Vargas is also the vice chair for the Tri-Valley-San Joaquin Valley Regional Rail Authority, which plans to establish the Valley Link rail line between Lathrop and Pleasanton by 2024. This week, 18 months after the authority was created, the authority’s board of directors approved its initial feasibility study. That allows the authority to seek state and federal funding for the 41-mile rail line.

Vargas noted that her early endorsements include Carpenters Local 152, San Joaquin County board of supervisors Chairman Miguel Villapudua, Manteca Mayor Benjamin Cantu, and Stockton City Council member Jesus Andrade.
