Millennium 2, Mariposa 0

After a scoreless first half, the Millennium boys soccer team regrouped and scored two goals in the second half to win the team’s first-round playoff game Tuesday at West High.

The 2-0 win over Mariposa High (8-9-1, 7-6-1 Southern Athletic League) advances the Millennium Falcons (8-4, 6-2 Central California Athletic Alliance) to the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 6 championship tournament. The No. 4 seed Falcons will go on the road Thursday to play No. 1 seed Le Grand High (13-3-2, 12-0-2 SAL).

Millennium coach Mark Cordero said that the Falcons had the advantage on offense in the first half but couldn’t get the ball into the net, with three shots going off the crossbar.

About midway through the second half, the Falcons got on the scoreboard. Senior Raul Espinoza took a shot that was blocked by the Mariposa goalie, but the goalie did not hang onto the ball and junior Jorge Espinoza followed it into the net for the goal.

About 3 minutes later, junior Elyas Alamshahi scored after Espinoza pushed past the Mariposa defense and sent a cross over to Alamshahi.
