West High senior Trevor Southards (right) blocks an attack by Tracy High freshman Jet Lasker on April 10 at Steve Thornton Gymnasium.

West High senior Trevor Southards was named the league MVP for the inaugural boys volleyball season in the Tri-City Athletic League.

Southards came from the Wolf Pack basketball team and became the leading attacker for West’s volleyball team. At 6-foot-5, Southards was a strong presence at the net and consistently led his team in kills throughout the season.

All the players on the West team were new to the sport, but they ended up outplaying the other three TCAL teams, Tracy, St. Mary’s and Lincoln, to win the league title.

Also making the top of the all-TCAL list was sophomore Julian Barbosa, the TCAL’s most valuable libero.
