Kimball cross country

The Kimball High boys cross-country team is set to compete at the Sac-Joaquin Section championships Saturday at Folsom High. Runners include freshman Abraham Ramos (from left), senior Jared Roque, sophomore Adam Cisneros, senior Sinjun Tran, senior Joshua Hernandez, freshman Rafael Lomeli and sophomore Rison Periera.

Kimball High will send its entire boys cross-country team to the Sac-Joaquin Section championships after the Jaguars finished among the top 10 teams at Saturday’s subsection meet in Angels Camp.

The Jaguars placed eighth out of 25 teams in the Division 3 competition, and their lead runner, senior Sinjun Tran, took sixth place out of 183 athletes. Tran had the best time among local runners at the meet, completing the 3-mile Frogtown course at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in 16 minutes, 50.3 seconds. His senior teammate Joshua Hernandez finished in 17th place (17:26), and both are medalists because they finished in the top 25 in their division.

“It’s a great feeling. I was so proud of them,” Tran said. “At the beginning of the season we were looking a little rough, but toward the end guys started running with each other. Our support guys started picking it up and running with each other. That’s always great because it builds the team bonding and that’s what we wanted.”

The next step is the Sac-Joaquin Section championships Saturday on the Willow Hill Course at Folsom High, which is where runners will have a chance to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation state championships Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

It will be the third section championship meet for Tran and Hernandez. They and their team qualified in 2016. Last year the Kimball boys didn’t make it to the section meet as a team, but the Kimball girls team did, and both Tran and Hernandez qualified as individual runners.

The Kimball team competing at the subsection meet also included senior Jonathon Loayza (19:06.8), sophomore Rison Pereira (19:22.5), freshman Rafael Lomeli (19:36.6), senior Jared Roque (19:48.4) and sophomore Adam Cisneros (20:15.6).

Hernandez said it was gratifying to reach the goal his team set at the start of the season.

“We’ve all worked really hard this year. Last year we all ran good at subsections and missed it, so to come back this year to subsections and qualify and finish eighth was really exciting for all of us.

“We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing. Keep doing the same runs, try to step it up a little bit.”

Tran missed the state meet last year by 6.8 seconds, but he feels confident he can finish among the top five and earn an automatic state meet entry this year.

“My times this year, they’re better and they’re more consistent. They’re about 30 seconds faster, and that’s my goal,” he said. “I’m hitting times more often and more frequently that are faster, so I’m happy with that.”

Kimball’s girls just missed a chance to advance as a team, placing 11th at the subsection meet. Junior Emily Grover led the Jaguars and placed 40th overall (22:04.6) out of 149 runners. She will go on to the section meet as one of 10 at-large runners.

Three more local girls will also advance to the section championship as individuals. The fastest runner among them was Tracy High junior Kimberly Brutus, with a 50th-place finish (21:13.8) out of 148 athletes in the Division 2 varsity girls race. Her team placed 17th out of 20 Division 2 teams.

West High sophomore Jasmine Cochiaosue finished 37th (21:27.9) out of 143 athletes in the Division 1 varsity girls race, and her team placed 15th out of 17 teams in Division 1. Millennium senior Hannah Lee placed 34th (24:42.8) out of 104 athletes in Division 5, and the Millennium girls placed 11th out of 12 teams.

West High’s boys also just missed qualifying as a team, taking 11th place out of 24 teams in Division 1. Senior Felipe Martinez placed 36th (17:29.7) out of 172 athletes and sophomore Joshua Hernandez placed 41st (17:33.9). Both will go on as individuals.

Also moving on to the section meet is Tracy High senior Bryce Pasquale, who placed 27th (17:05.0) out of 172 runners in the Division 2 boys varsity race. In Division 5, Millennium High freshman Carson Edwards placed 21st (19:20.9) and Delta Charter junior Sebastian Chavez placed 24th (19:36.6) to advance to the section meet.

Also qualifying for the SJS championships is Tracy High freshman Charlie Dao. He placed seventh (12:12.8) out of 141 athletes in the 2-mile Division 2 freshman race, and Tracy’s full team placed seventh out of 15 teams, just missing the top six teams that advance at that level.

Varsity team champions were Jesuit, Division 1 boys; Davis, Division 1 girls; Bella Vista, Division 2 boys; St. Francis, Division 2 girls; Del Oro, Division 3 boys; Vista Del Lago, Division 3 girls; Placer, Division 4 boys; El Dorado, Division 4 girls; Capital Christian, Division 5 boys; and Western Sierra, Division 5 girls.

Mountain House High did not compete at the subsection meet.
