Kimball High junior Allan Hunter is the Sac-Joaquin Section champion in the boys triple jump, following his leap of 45 feet, 11½ inches on Friday on the first day of the SJS Masters meet at Davis Senior High in Davis.

Hunter got his best mark of the day on his second of six jumps. It was nearly two feet further than his previous best jump (44-2), which he set at the Valley Oak League championships at Kimball High on May 2.

Right behind him was West junior Brandon Lindner in second place (45-5). Lindner logged his best mark on his first jump of the day.

Both Hunter and Lindner advance to the California Interscholastic Federation state championships. The top three athletes from each event advance to state. Friday’s competition included six field events – three for the boys and three for the girls – and preliminary heats for most of the track events. The rest of the field events and the finals for the track events will be on Saturday.

Also winning the gold medal in her event and advancing to state is West High junior Melisa Toilolo, with her throw of 43-8½ in the shot put. She already had the best throw of the day based on her first attempt (42-0), and kept improving on that until she hit her best distance on her sixth and final throw.

Tracy High junior Jason Reyes advances to state after he placed second in the discus with a throw of 151 feet, 8 inches. He reached that distance, his best throw yet by more than 5 feet, on his fifth throw of the day.

In the track events, another showdown between the state’s top two hurdlers, West senior Warren Williams and St. Mary’s junior Jamar Marshall, is set for Saturday afternoon. Marshall had the best time from Friday’s trials (14.24) and Williams goes into the finals as the No. 2 seed after he won his heat (14.43).

Williams is also the top seed in the 300 hurdles after he won his heat with his best time yet 39.01. The winners of each of the four preliminary heats in the track events, plus the next four fastest athletes, advance to Saturday’s finals.
