The Tracy Wrestling Club made a strong showing at the California USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle Cadet/Junior Greco State Championships, held this past weekend at Selland Arena in Fresno.
The local club sent 21 wrestlers, with 12 placing among the top eight in the boys and girls brackets in the freestyle competition. The Tracy Wrestling Club novice girls (12 and under) also tied for a first-place team award with Grapplers Studio of Laguna Beach as Lily Dizon took second place in the 60-pound bracket and Jasmine Lund placed third in the 80-pound bracket.
Lily won her semifinal match on a 10-0 technical fall and then lost on an 8-7 decision in the championship match. Jasmine won her first match on a first-period pin (1:21), lost on a 9-1 decision, won her consolation semifinal match on a first-period pin (0:31) and won her third-place match with a pin in the second period (2:23).
Lily also competed in the intermediate boys (10U) 59-pound bracket, where she placed eighth.
Top medalists for the local club also included Jesse Lopez, who took second place in the intermediate boys 49-pound bracket. He won two consecutive matches by decision (6-3, 12-4) and finished a hard-fought match in the final round, losing on a 23-12 technical fall.
Victor Ramirez also claimed silver with his performance in the schoolboy (14U) 97-pound bracket. He won three matches in a row, all on technical falls (10-0, 12-0, 19-8), and then lost on a second-period pin (2:45).
Diego Goins placed third in the bantam (8U) 56-pound class. He went 4-1, including three wins by technical fall and a loss on a technical fall, and he claimed the bronze medal with a first-period pin (1:17) in the third-place match.
Also placing third was Kolby Dennington, who wrestled in the bantam 62-pound bracket. He went 5-1 for the tournament, including three wins by technical fall, a win by decision and a loss on a 14-13 decision. He won the third place match on a 24-11 technical fall.
Tracy Wrestling Club had three wrestlers place sixth in the schoolboy division: Cole Borges (119 pounds), Vanden Caudillo (125) and Luke Chan (136). Two club members placed seventh in the intermediate division, Brock Bogetti (53) and Joseph Lund (59); and John Quintoa placed seventh in the novice division (63).
