The Tracy Tritons hosted their 50th annual Tracy Invitational swim meet Saturday and Sunday, marking the start of the Mid-Valley Swim League season and giving more than 200 local swimmers a chance to represent their hometown among six MVSL teams.

The Tritons’ origins date back to 1965, and the team established the Tracy Invitational as the kickoff for the MVSL season — usually on Memorial Day weekend — a few years later. For most of those years, the team competed under the guidance of head coach Pinkie Phillips, the late namesake of West High’s Pinkie Phillips Aquatics Center, venue for this weekend’s meet.

Tritons board president Claire Wood said the team is experiencing a resurgence, growing steadily over the past few years, mostly in the younger age groups.

“Most of our new swimmers are just joining via word of mouth,” Wood said. “The kids’ friends are swimming so they join in. It’s competitive but we try to make it a lot of fun.”

The team is mostly volunteer-run, with families pitching in at meets and older swimmers helping coach the younger ones.

“Families can participate as much or as little as they want,” Wood said. “The more they participate, the more they’ll get out of it.”

Head coach Melissa West is in her fourth year leading the team and is impressed with how quickly new swimmers learn and perfect their strokes. The team started practice in early April and has already had one dual meet, against Manteca, on May 18.

“For having a month and a half training, there’s so many that have dropped so much time,” West said. “Our coaching staff has done a really good job getting to know all of the swimmers, and that personal connection really makes the difference in the swimmers.”

West enjoys coaching the team because she sees swimming as more than competition or recreation. She sees it as a life skill suitable for all ages and abilities.

“They’ll always feel comfortable in the pool, lake, ocean — they’ll know not to panic and will know how to handle themselves,” she said. “As long as they have fun and love what they’re doing, it’s a win. You can’t go wrong with swimming.”

After two days of competition, the Discovery Bay River Otters were the top team with a score of 1,309, with the Tritons in second place (1,186) and the Ripon Sea Lions in third (1,027.5).

The Tritons’ top swimmer was Gabe Chandler, who won four of his six individual events in the 15-16 boys division: the 100-yard freestyle (54.44 seconds), 100 butterfly (1 minute, 7.22 seconds), 100 individual medley (1:04.93) and 50 freestyle (24.54).

Brielle Mullikin was among the top girls with wins in the 9-10 girls 50 backstroke (34.50), 50 breaststroke (40.36) and 50 freestyle (30.94).

Lela Ziller was the top girl in the 13-14 division, with wins in the 100 individual medley (1:08.65), 50 breaststroke (35.54) and 50 freestyle (26.78).

First-place swimmers also included Natalie Quan, 15-16 girls 100 breaststroke (1:20.97); Cruz Fairfield, 15-16 boys 100 backstroke (1:06.36), and Megan Gee, 17-18 girls 100 breaststroke (1:26.15).

The Tritons will continue their season Saturday when they visit the Modesto Mavericks at Downey High School in Modesto.
